In an artsy mood

Even though I haven't moved out yet, and haven't even picked out an apartment, I am planning the art that's going up on the walls.

I've become obsessed with comic books the last couple of months; graphic novels like Fables, Y: The Last Man, V for Vendetta, Batman and Watchmen have captured my imagination.

But Fables, specifically their covers, have really caught my attention. Artist James Jean draws fantastically beautiful art for the cover of Fables. You may recognize his name because he drew the haunting nymph/fairies from the Prada S/S 08 collection.
His drawings evoke feelings of pleasure, fantasy and danger.

While many comic book covers are very straight-forward and cartoonish; Jean's covers are intelligent and thought-provoking; you have to look closely to see all the details and the full story.

These are some of my favourite which I plan on putting up in my future apartment:

This is probably my favourite cover. I love the soft colours combined with Cinderella's sex appeal and her fatalness. It's just a sexy drawing.

My second favourite cover is called "Suffer Not." The drawing shoes Hansel (of Hansel and Gretel fame) drowning two so-called witches. The image is so powerful to me because it is frightning. It makes me uncomfortable to look at because it is at once a beautiful drawing but it depicts murder. I love that.

A noose, a flying monkey and a soldier's helmet. What's going on in this drawing? If you've read the story you would know, but on its own, it's a mystery. I like the sense of lonliness and isolation I get when I look at it.

I just really like the wolf in this picture. It's a bit Asian in the drawing with the long, curvy brushstrokes and the green eyes.

Kick ass women in revealing dresses trying to kill each other? What's not to love?

I am a huge fan of Scheherazade's One Thousand and One Nights, so this genie drawing really excites me because it evokes all of those ancient stories of Aladin and his magic lamp.


Since I'm a huge Watchmen fan, I was so excited when I learned that Jean painted a portrait of Sally Jupiter that was used in the movie (it can be seen in the Comedian's room.)

I was even more excited when I learned that I could buy a print replica of it. And so I did. Along with a beautiful alien-like Christmas print.

I'm attracted to this drawing because there are many elements which I love about it. First of all, it's about Christmas which is my favourite time of the year, and secondly, it has weird alien-like beings in it. That combimation makes it awesome. You can buy it here.

Anyways I'm really excited to frame them and hang them up. Once I get that apartment of course.

Falling down at Prada

Remember at the Prada S/S 09 show the big kafuffle over the models falling down in those impossibly high and impractical shoes?

Here's a great Fashion Television clip that shows the models tripping and falling. I wonder how many careers were ruined that night?

The reactions to the show are really funny and varied from "I felt sorry for the models" to "that's the price you pay for being a supermodel."

Evil Prada shoes hurt models

At the Prada show, two models fell right down on the runway and several of them stumbled. The cause? Sky high heels.
The Telegraph says:

“I was having a panic attack, my hands were shaking. The heels were so high,” one of the models said. “Some of the girls were crying backstage they were so scared.”

As the video pans up, you see one of models' foot wobbling and then she crashes to the ground. Instead of trying to walk in them again, she carries them in her hands and still looks hot.

You can that several of the models are having trouble walking' their knees shake a bit and their feet look unsteady. I applaud these girls for risking injury to themselves. Well, not like they had a choice. But still. Modeling is dangerous work!

During the finale walk, another girl falls to the ground and instead of completing the walk, she turns around and goes backstage.

Prada S/S 09: All crumpled up

I was really looking forward to the Prada show, seeing as how the last two seasons have been so trend-setting and came out with beautiful bags (ie. the fairy bag and the lace bag.) So I was excited to see what bags Miuccia came up with.
Unfortunately I didn't like the bags very much. They were scrunched up nylon and leather handbags with pull-ties on the sides. Some of them were very crinkly and had random pieces of leather sticking out from the sides. The effect was rather messy but maybe I have to see it in person to appreciate it. I do like the idea of having a crinkled bag but I don't think the result was beautiful. Compared to the art that was the fairy bag, these ones look like leftovers.
However there was one stand-out piece: a snake skin clutch with a long handle was gorgeous.

Dreaming of faeries

Ever since I became obsessed with Prada's S/S 08 fairy collection, I've become entranced by fairies. So much so that I've seriously been thinking about getting a fairy tattoo. My co-workers say it's lame, my cousin (who has at least a dozen tattoos) says to do it. I think I should wait at least a year and see if I still like the idea, but right now, if I were walking by a tattoo parlour, I would drop in and get inked.

Although Summer is almost over (sad!) there is still time to dress like an enchanted nymph.

Nina Ricci S/S 08 marched a disheveled wood elves down the runway with whimsical dresses and feathered hair accessories.

Erin Fetherston's S/S 08 models also wore feathers and shimmery silk dresses as if they were ice fairies or angels.

Alexander McQueen's models were dark, gothic fairies with black, sparkly wings.

Prada of course had the most obvious fairy inspiration with James Jean drawings of sensual nymphs and sprites on sheer silk tunics and chiffon dresses.

Bag review: Prada Fairy Tessuto tote

So last week I hit BIN and bought a Prada Fairy bag off EBay and I just received it last Thursday. I have to say that any bag that I can survive a trip to my cottage is a keeper. It's made of nylon so it's super-sturdy and dirt can wipe off it easily. Now normally I'm a leather gal, but this bag still makes me swoon with its leather trim and leather woven chain straps. I'm the kind of woman who carries her life in her bags and this bag has proven to carry everything with room left over. The inside is black printed lining with two large pockets and a snap closure so you can't see any dirt. When I took it to my cottage on the weekend, it fit a large towel, jeans, a few tees, toiletries, three magazines and a Batman comic book.
But the best part of the bag are the fairies; they are so ethereal and haunting. The pop of red and brown stand out against the white background, you can't help but stare at it.
My only grip with this bag is that the handles squeak because the leather grinds against the chain so it's a bit annoying. But if that's the only flaw that this bag has, then I'm hooked.

I bought a Prada Fairy bag

I blame it on BIN. Damn EBay.
No, it's not the uber-luxurious deerskin leather version which I was salivating over; but this comes at a close second. I won't have to worry about the ink bleeding and I won't have to protect it like it's the Holy Grail.
It's official name is the Fairy Tessuto Print Nylon Tote, and as the name says, it is made of sturdy Nylon and the edges and handles are made of leather.





This reminds me of an Edgar Allen Poe story. A bloody castle. Excellent.

Prada and Linda are a match made in advertising heaven

This lace is anything but granny-ish and old. Not too sure about the leather bags- the odd embellishments remind me of fins. But the lace replacement of the Fairy bag is gorgeous. Very classic but erotic. Sames goes with the dresses- very peek-a-boo but elegant. I love the shades of blue in the background; it's almost as if Linda is under water. Lace and water...now that's sexy.
